Need help getting started?
Here are five tips to get the most out of your experience!
1. Don’t be shy. Say hello!
In the Purdue community, we’re all about lending a helping hand.
There are already 4,000 people registered on the Purdue Alumni portal, and more joining each day.
Browse the directory based on year of graduation, industry, location, and more!
See an interesting profile? Introduce yourself! Brooke Linn (EDU’04) shared tips in Networking for Introverts: Five tips on how to make it work for you.
“When you send a message, make sure to personalize it based on what you saw on their profile,” says Linn. “What did you think was interesting? Then see if they wouldn’t mind answering a few questions.”
Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to someone new! Boilermakers are generous with their time and expertise, especially when others are in need.
2. Become a mentor, find a mentor — or both!
When you log in to the Purdue Alumni portal, check the left-hand panel on the main page. Click mentoring, and then you’ll see a list of options in the drop-down menu. Click on “settings” to get started!
Mentoring is open to everyone, whatever stage of life or career you find yourself in right now.
Answering questions, providing advice, acting as a sounding board — it all adds up!
3. Join (or start) a group!
The Purdue Alumni portal is home to hundreds of different online communities.
Want to connect with sorority sisters? Fellow entrepreneurs? Graduates from the College of Agriculture?
You name it, there’s a community for it.
On the odd chance it doesn’t exist yet, why not create it?
4. Get the conversation started!
Some communities might need an icebreaker to get the conversation going.
Go ahead. Throw an icebreaker out there to get the conversation going!
Favorite Purdue memory. Best class or professor you ever had. Most memorable Purdue Athletics victory. It doesn’t have to be fancy — even just asking folks to introduce themselves can help get things going.
5. What can I do?
Can you offer advice to small businesses? Offer web design support? Review résumés?
If you have services you can offer, share them. If you’re in need, don’t be shy. We’ve got you.
It’s good to be part of a community of 630,000 people who have your back!
