BIG 10 Conference
In 1895, Purdue President James Smart initiated the meeting with other university presidents that resulted in the creation of the Western Conference, which would later become the Big 10, the oldest collegiate athletic conference in the United States. The name Big 10 was not officially adopted until 1987. The conference has expanded and now includes 14 teams, from Nebraska in the west to Rutgers on the East Coast.
